Lake Alvin May 11, 2008

After a day of working around the place it seemed like a good idea to take some time out for relaxation. So about 5:30PM Kay and I decided to head over to Lake Alvin with the kayaks for the first time. Although only about 58 -60 degrees we thought we could handle it. So after the short 15 minute drive we were unloading the boats on the west end of the lake. There were a few people fishing from shore and a couple small fishing boat on the lake. The water was like glass...smooth. Once in the lake we headed south west until we were at the point the lake narrowed into the creek flowing going south. The water at the mouth of the creek was only about a foot maybe two deep. So we turned around and headed east towards the state park area and the beach. The water on the west end of the lake was full of what I believe was algae of some kind. Rather nasty, but by the time we got about half way to the east end the water cleaned nicely. It really was a great night. No wind, warm enough and pretty quite. We paddled done to the east end of the lake turning around just before the spillway. Paddling back we were headed right into the sunset. I was hard to see sometimes. There really was not much wild life around. A couple ducks was about it. Back at the launch site we loaded up and headed for home. What a great night. I would not have guessed it before we left home.
